FIRST SALE
First sale is the landed fish that is sold or registered at an auction centre to registered buyers or to producer organisations (PO). Volumes, value and prices are reported. Volumes are expressed in net weight for EU countries, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and the United Kingdom, and in live weight equivalent (lwe) for Norway. Prices are expressed in EUR/kg (without VAT). For Norway, they are expressed in EUR/kg of live weight. First sales may differ from landings since the former do not cover fish that is landed by vessels owned by processing companies or direct sales to processors.
FIRST SALE / REAL-TIME DATA

LANDINGS
Description
Landings mean the initial unloading of any quantity of fisheries products from on board a fishing vessel to land in a given country, regardless of the nationality of the vessel making the landings, but also fishery products landed by the country’s vessels in non-EU countries. Landings are reported in net weight and in euro.
AQUACULTURE
Description
Aquaculture refers to the farming of aquatic (freshwater or saltwater) organisms, such as fish, molluscs, crustaceans and aquatic plants. Aquaculture data are reported in live weight equivalent and value.
IMPORT - EXPORT
Exports (extra-EU) are goods recorded by Member States when they leave the territory of the EU (transit is not included).
Imports (extra-EU) are goods recorded by Member States when they enter the territory of the EU (transit is not included).
Intra-EU trade statistics record the trade of goods between Member States.
The standard source of extra-EU trade statistics is the customs declaration. For intra-EU trade, the source is any VAT-registered business that trades goods with other Member States.
For exports, the partner country is the country identified at the time of export as the final destination of the goods.
For imports, the partner country is the country of origin of the goods.
From 2021, EUMOFA reports imports from the UK under the code “GB” as origin mentioned in the customs declarations. These imports do not cover products which wholly originate in Northern Ireland. Exhaustive imports data from UK will be available once the customs treatment modalities under the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland regarding fisheries and aquaculture products will be defined.
PROCESSING
Processing of fishery and aquaculture products (FAP’s) refers to the processes that transform the raw material into the final product delivered to the customer.
RETAIL - CONSUMPTION
Consumption refers to the amount of fisheries and aquaculture products that are consumed during a given period, and within a geographic area, such as a country.
In EUMOFA, consumption data are provided as:
- online retail prices, disseminated as daily in the related bulk download section and aggregated as monthly in the Online retail prices dashboard;
- volumes and values of consumption of fresh products recorded by a sample of households, disseminated as monthly in the Household consumption of fresh products dashboard;
- volumes of “apparent consumption”, disseminated as yearly data in the Supply balance sheet dashboard.
"Apparent consumption" is calculated by using the supply balance sheet that provides an estimate of the supply of fishery and aquaculture products available for human consumption at EU level.
The calculation of the supply balance sheet is based on the equation:
Apparent consumption =
[(total catches – industrial catches) + aquaculture + imports] – exports.
Catches targeted for fishmeal (industrial catches) are excluded. Non-food use products are also excluded from imports and exports.
