Preserved anchovy in the EU

The study analyses the market of preserved anchovy in the EU, focusing on the price structure along the supply chain in Italy, Spain and Croatia.

In 2023, Italy was the second EU producer of anchovy, with high exports (15.612 tonnes LWE) and imports (24.683 tonnes LWE, more than the national production). The price structure analysis covers glass jars of salted anchovy fillets in olive oil. In 2023, Spain led EU production with 44,830 tonnes, accounting for 46% of the total output. It is the top EU producer and relies primarily on domestic production. Croatia is the third-largest EU producer of anchovies and the second-largest exporter, which explains its low domestic consumption. The country is almost entirely supplied by national catches in the Adriatic, totaling 13,840 tonnes LWE in 2023. In the same year, Croatia's exports reached 15,723 tonnes LWE, accounting for nearly its entire supply.
