Work begins on another hybrid salmon farm in Norway

Norwegian company Arctic Seafarm has begun construction on a land-based salmon farm in Nesna, Norway, in collaboration with fish farmer Kvarøy Fiskeoppdrett and EMK Capital. The facility, located in the Helgeland region, will produce up to 25,000 tonnes of salmon annually. The facility will be powered by solar, hydropower, and recycled energy. The first smolts will be released in 2026.


Bulgaria and Romania endorse the EU Mission Ocean and Waters Charter

Bulgaria and Romania have endorsed the Charter of the EU Mission 'Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030', committing to accelerate the restoration of the Danube River and Black Sea region. The mission aims to protect and restore the health of the ocean and waters by 2030 through research, innovation, citizen engagement, and investments in the sustainable blue economy.


FAO highlights importance of seafood to global food security

FAO chief economist Máximo Torero has urged for increased investment in seafood production, stating that global consumption needs to increase by 22% by 2050 to keep pace with the growing population. Torero also highlighted the importance of aquaculture and wild-capture fisheries for food security and livelihood provision, highlighting the need for a holistic approach and gender equality.


New EMFAF call for proposals for smart specialisation and regenerative ocean farming

The European Commission has launched a call for proposals under the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) for EUR 5.7 million to fund regional flagship projects supporting the sustainable blue economy in EU sea basins.


Reconnecting land and sea: Ireland’s first seaweed processing facility

The Seaweed Company in Ireland has developed a seaweed farm and processing facility in Mulroy Bay, Donegal, using EU funds. The facility, which uses local know-how and phycologist training, processes seaweed into SeaMeat®, a meat substitute used in beef burgers. The seaweed also reduces food waste and CO2 emissions.
