Cryopreservation Breakthrough Could Transform Mussel Farming and Safeguard Biodiversity

Researchers from the University of Vigo have developed the first successful cryopreservation protocol for juvenile mussels over 1 mm in size, reducing dependence on wild mussel seed. The study demonstrates that nutrition enhances cryotolerance in complex marine larvae and opens the door to cryobanking mussel seedstock for hatcheries.


EU and Iceland strengthen cooperation on sustainable fisheries and ocean affairs

The European Union and Iceland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation on fisheries and ocean affairs. The agreement aims to promote sustainable fisheries, scientific research, marine conservation, and protect marine biodiversity. It also calls for an annual high-level dialogue to monitor progress and advance cooperation in common interests. The first meeting is scheduled for 2026.
