Belgian sea fisheries show slight recovery after historic low

Belgian sea fisheries experienced a modest recovery in 2024, with total landings increasing by 0.89% to 15.168 tonnes and landing value rising by 5.4% to nearly 88.5 million euros. Squid remained the most landed species, followed by sole and plaice, with sole generating the highest value at 35.7 million euros. Despite improvements, the EU's assessment of the Common Fisheries Policy indicated slow fish stock recovery and ongoing challenges, including ageing fleets and rising costs.


The Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF)

On 29 April 2026, the European Commission adopted the Middle East crisis Temporary State aid Framework (METSAF) to assist Member States in supporting the EU economy amid the Middle East crisis. In effect until 31 December 2026, METSAF allows aid for the agriculture, fisheries, and transport sectors, covering up to 70% of extra costs from fuel and fertilizer price increases and offering up to €50,000 based on estimated fuel consumption. Additionally, it raises the aid intensity for electricity price relief under the Clean Industrial Deal State aid Framework from 50% to 70%, allowing for cumulation with certain other aid amounts.


Commission launches public consultation on the European Ocean Act

The European Commission has initiated a public consultation to inform the European Ocean Act, part of the European Ocean Pact set for adoption in 2026. This Act aims to enhance ocean governance in the EU and consolidate economic, environmental, and social objectives for sustainable ocean resource use. The Commission aims to adopt the proposal by the end of 2026, as indicated in its Work Programme.
