The 47th annual meeting of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) in Rome aimed to strengthen sustainability strategies in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The GFCM adopted measures for commercial species in the Black Sea, enhancing scientific cooperation, and reinforcing solidarity between Mediterranean countries.
Commission and Norway agree on EU quota of Svalbard cod for 2025 and beyond
The European Commission and Norway have reached an agreement on fisheries issues, including a quota of Svalbard cod to the EU at 2,8274% of TAC. The agreement, a result of the High-Level Dialogue, will allow EU vessels to fish the quota in both Svalbard and international waters.
Oceanloop lands €35 million for German and Spanish expansion
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has provided funding to Oceanloop, a European company, to expand its shrimp farm in Kiel and build a 2,000 tonne capacity facility in Gran Canaria. The EIB loan is supported by the InvestEU programme, aiming to trigger €372 billion in additional investment in new technologies until 2027.
Europe to fund €9 million seaweed project
The I3-4-Seaweed project, funded by €9 million from the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA), aims to foster innovation and interregional collaboration in the EU's seaweed sector. The project will link six investment cases to develop seaweed technology and products, addressing regional needs in the blue economy.
EU-backed project to measure ‘water footprint’ of Mediterranean fisheries
The EU-supported Wantefish project aims to assess and mitigate water consumption in Mediterranean fisheries, funded by the EU and the Turkish National Agency. The project will calculate the water footprint of fishing activities across the region, analysing water usage across commercial fishing boats, fish farms, and aquaculture processing facilities.
