Fishmeal and fish oil - 2025 Edition

The study aims to provide an overview of the fishmeal and fish oil sectors derived from forage fisheries in the European Union. This report is an update of the 2023 Edition.

The global production of fishmeal and fish oil remains relatively stable, with an average of 5.1 million tonnes of fishmeal and around 1.2 million tonnes of fish oil over the past 10 years. Denmark is by far the largest producer in the EU, accounting for 35% to 50% of total EU production. The price level of European fishmeal and fish oil follows global prices to a large degree, depending heavily on production in South America (Peru, Chile). In 2024, around 77% of the EU’s fish oil exports went to Norway and 15% to the UK.
