EUMOFA Talk at European Maritime Day (31 May) - Marketing of alien, invasive and low value species


EUMOFA is pleased to invite you to the upcoming workshop “Marketing of alien, invasive and low value species”, which will be held in person on 31 May 2024, from 11:15 to 12:30 CET at the European Maritime Day in Svendborg, Denmark.

The workshop aims to explore niche markets, assess economic viability, and discuss the biodiversity impact of marketing less “popular”, invasive or cheaper species. It addresses supply chain challenges, regulatory adjustments, and strategies for consumer acceptance. Questions will delve into analysing consumer preferences and demand for alternative species and the profitability of introducing new species. Practical insight will be provided by stakeholders to also evaluate the sustainability of harvesting or farming lesser-known species. Panellists will discuss incentives and subsidies for businesses transitioning to alternative species.

There will be a Q&A session and a group discussion.

The panel members will include:

  • Introduction: Laurène Jolly, Policy Officer, European Commission, Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE)
  • Christian Philip Unmack, Senior Project Manager, Eurofish International Organization; Topic: Alien species and market opportunities in the EU market.
  • Loreta Bražinskaitė, Expert from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania; Topic: Economic opportunities prospects of round goby in Lithuania
  • Alice Parri, PR manager, Mariscadoras srl benefit - Fondazione Cetacea Onlus; Topic: Economic opportunities for the blue crab in Italy
  • Bela Ubranyi, Full time professor, Hungarian University of Agriculture & life science; Topic: African catfish, underrated species in the EU market

The EUMOFA Team will be also on hand throughout the two-day event at its stand to offer practical demonstrations on how to access data and key information using new dashboards on the European fisheries and aquaculture market available on its website.
